Supreme Court mulls California law on anti-abortion facilities -

Supreme Court mulls California law on anti-abortion facilitiesBy Andrew Chung WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday tackled a dispute over whether a California law requiring Christian-based facilities that counsel pregnant women against abortion to post signs disclosing the availability of state-subsidized abortions and birth control violates their right to free speech. The nine justices began hearing a scheduled hour of arguments in an appeal by a group of non-profit facilities called crisis pregnancy centers of a lower court ruling upholding the Democratic-backed 2015 law. The case represents a crossroads of two contentious issues: abortion and the breadth of the right to freedom of speech under the U.S. Constitution's First Amendment.

U.S. Interior Department offers oil leases near Utah's wilderness monuments -

U.S. Interior Department offers oil leases near Utah's wilderness monumentsBy Valerie Volcovici WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Department of Interior on Tuesday will auction off more than 51,000 acres (21,000 hectares) in southeastern Utah for oil and gas development, over objections from conservationists, who say the move threatens sensitive archaeological and wilderness sites. The auction comes as the administration of President Donald Trump seeks to boost domestic energy production by expanding federal leasing and rolling back land protections – an agenda that has cheered industry but outraged environmentalists. The Utah lease sale will include terrain near the boundaries of the former Bears Ears National Monument, whose size was scaled back by the Trump administration last year, as well as the Hovenweep and Canyons of the Ancients monuments, according to the department.
