Migrants 'knock at front door' for asylum after Trump crackdownTIJUANA/REYNOSA, Mexico (Reuters) - More Mexicans and Central Americans are lining up to make asylum requests at the U.S.-Mexico border as word spreads of a U.S. crackdown on families crossing illegally and the threat of brutal gangs lying in wait if they go it alone. Officials at shelters in border cities as well as migrants from Mexico and Central America told Reuters there was a rising number of people waiting, often for weeks, to make asylum pleas to immigration authorities at official border crossings. Many of the dozens of migrants interviewed by Reuters said they decided to present an official asylum request after hearing about parents being separated from children when crossing the U.S. border illegally, and about friends making successful requests.

Growing wildfire menaces rural, northern California(Reuters) - A raging wildfire on Sunday threatened to cut off access to a rural community in northern California where authorities have ordered the evacuations of some 2,500 residents. The blaze imperiled the single road leading into a mostly residential community with some farms, officials said. "Fire has jumped the road in a couple of places," Dale Carnathan, emergency services manager for the Lake County Sheriff's Office said by phone, warning that the danger for local residents was "absolutely imminent." The fire had scorched 3,000 acres and threatened 600 buildings, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said.

South Carolina congressional candidate expected to recover after crash(Reuters) - South Carolina Republican congressional candidate Katie Arrington was expected to recover fully from a weekend car crash, her campaign said on Sunday, adding that she had no lasting neurological injuries and should walk again soon. Arrington, who ousted incumbent U.S. Representative Mark Sanford in a primary earlier this month, was badly injured in the crash on Friday night that killed the driver of another vehicle. "Katie will remain in the hospital for the next two weeks and will make a full recovery," Mule said in a statement.

It was unclear if Trump was advocating an expansion of the provision that allows expedited removals of illegal immigrants at or near the U.S. border, a policy his administration has embraced since he took office.
